The good news is networkers are beginning to wake up today and the pendulum is swinging back to network marketing from sales-marketing. Those who are capturing the large incomes that grow year after year are those who understand and apply the basics to their business opportunity. There is nothing wrong with going after large numbers of people. It's not so much in what you do but more in how you do it that makes the difference. Authors of The Masters Program manuscripts spend quality time and space outlining that difference.

Don't Make The Mistake Of Thinking Network marketing is Sales-marketing - It Is Not. Networking was not designed that way 50 years ago, it has never worked that way and won't work that way today.  It is a home based business you can start part time, using leverage with the combined effort of others to build a business you can walk away from that will continue to pay you for life.

You either have a relationship now or you spend the time and money to create a business relationship by marketing. Sales-marketing is different. It's about getting people to buy and use your product or service. Networking is about helping people to earn money using your product or service as a vehicle to do it. In both cases people use your product for the product benefits to them, but in networking your people also use your marketing plan to add money into their family budget. That benefit is the power in networking that sales-marketing alone can't produce. Business relationships developed with a few people each doing a little bit to develop a few business relationships with a few other people. A business relationship is formed when you help someone else get what they want and you get paid for doing it.

A basic concept is: Credible Relationships

Networking is integrating business activities with other people. It's more of a partnership where as sales-marketing is a customer relationship. Partnering with other people creates warm markets and co-mingling results to the benefit of each.

Above all else, preserving your warm market is the most important goal in networking for your Internet home based business opportunity online. In any online home business, preserving existing customers is always done at the fraction of the cost and effort of obtaining new customers. In networking preserving your existing distributors is the same critical task and I will show you later how proper building of your business will take very little advertising, or at the most, a few ads only as you start to build out your downline but only if you preserve your credibility.

The definition of warm when we speak of warm markets, is friendly or good trusting relationships, How many times has someone sponsored you into a program and you never hear from them again until they want you to spend more money with them for another deal?  First they aren't supporting you with help or encouragement in the last program they enrolled you in, now they are in something else and trying to get you to give them more money and recycle you to this one.  The only warm feeling I get from those people is when their hand goes into my pocket reaching for my wallet. They are salespeople but not good ones and certainly not networkers. They are looking for customers to take advantage of not business partners.

High volume sales people coming to the home based business network marketing arena looking for a quick buck, taught their people a little product knowledge, then taught recruiting by sales-marketing techniques. Using hype and the false promise of little or no work to get high paychecks, those promoters were getting people to join their business opportunity but they forgot most people don't want to make a living by selling their friends and relatives on the idea of doing something those friends and relatives don't want to do. The result was the promoters as well as the people they enrolled built temporary network marketing organizations that bled to death from the bottom up.

Because the network programs they belonged to taught massive sales-marketing, and most people don't want to sell, downlines evaporated, companies failed and people lost their "spent time" and any future earnings. Those who did put friends or even their online business associates in programs using sales-marketing as a marketing platform lost those warm market contacts.  In many cases the ex-distributors they lost, left the industry entirely under an assumption that networking didn't work. And, the sad part, they weren't even networking - they were selling. Those who stayed had their downlines and their customer bases fall apart leaving a constant need to replace people who quit. The larger an organization they had, the more new people that are needed to fill the "black holes" created by those leaving. 

Being a sales person every day for the rest of their life didn't appeal to many people and after all the dream of networking is to build an online home business you can walk away from that will continue to pay you for life.  That dream is alive and well today but only if the basics are in place in your network business.

The sales-marketing promoters trying to counteract the problem said to their people, "just buy my sales-marketing lead deal" or my mass e-mail spamming software and you can get rich. Spend $100 on an advertising budget every month with me and become a salesman so you never need to talk to people.  There is nothing wrong with leads and there are a couple of good companies in the marketplace that can provide quality double opt-in and phone verified lead contact services for your Internet home based business opportunity online. The good ones will tell you that you must contact each lead and sort through them for the person you want to be in business with.     

The High volume sales people taught "Just recruit massively by direct mail or E-mail."  By some osmotic process they were supposed to get other people to do the same thing.  Of course that didn't work so promoters left one company to jump to another recycling their downlines. Worse than that, the promoters started new companies and 90% of start-ups fail within the first 6 months to 1 year of the launch date.  The problem of selling a network program just gets worse and worse. A case of the blind leading the blind, the promoters didn't understand the network business so how could they teach others how to succeed?   Companies today are still turning out salesmen and not networkers. Sales-marketing will not sustain a network downline in an Internet business.

Helping those in your customer base earn more money than they spend for the product or service by having them provide you with a few referrals will give you customer retention in the product flow part of your online business and lasting customers are important. It's just this simple, if your company's monthly product shipment or service cost is say $50.00, then see to it each of your customers are earning $70 or $80 every month after referring a few other customers to your Internet home based business opportunity online. That will glue them into your customer base. They will stay with you for life and out of those few referrals you might find a business builder or two.  Your Business Builders will earn much more because of the leverage from their efforts. Income from retail product customer referrals is pocket change compared to the leveraged income from enrolling business builders so network your home based business by developing business relationships with people who want more out of life, those who want a better standard of living.  Remember, your Business Builders use products too.

People entering the marketing industry and particularly those people in the network marketing segment of the industry, during the very late 1980's and throughout the 1990's were taught some incorrect concepts about their craft. And, their income suffered as a result.

They were taught to ignore the scientific basics of networking and go for volume recruiting for their online home business. Looking at only a narrow avenue within the artistic part of their task, they were taught to sell, sell and sell some more to get enrollments leaving out the very basics that make networking work. They were taught just sell and get the enrollment fees and the applications.  Get everyone to join and let providence sort out those who "make it" and let those that don't fail.

Unfortunately, many of those people are passing themselves off as networking gurus, writing E-books, giving seminars and designing training programs today. They perpetuate the problem rather than solving the problem. The focus should be, "how do I get my people earning more money" NOT "how can I sell more people and get them to spend money to join my Internet business".

Great technology often has a dark side and sometimes the ease of doing a task using technology can backfire. The advent of the home computer brought with it a marvelous ability to communicate with a lot of other people and do it fast with relative low cost. Websites and e-mail made short work of showing incredible numbers of people a business opportunity. But unfortunately, just having large numbers of people joining a company's network program is not the answer to long term or even medium term success in this industry.

In the Introduction and in Chapter One we discussed that the one thread that runs through networking and makes it work is leverage. All the rules, the science part of your online business, have leverage woven through them.  Often introducing incorrect strategies and techniques can actually remove concepts and thus remove the leverage. One of those techniques is trying to market a network program using a sales-marketing platform. You can have the best product or service and the best home based business network program on the planet, and still go broke... if you don't know how to market it.  That applies more so today, both online and off line, than ever before. The glue that holds the fibers of a networking organization together is how you use leverage when you market and when you build your business. 

Sales is an honorable profession, think about the salesperson who sold you the suit or dress that makes you look sharp, think about the person you bought a car from and helped you get a good deal or the salesperson who helped you select any product you really love. Honorable people, yet there are jerks and slick salespeople just like there are less than honorable people in any profession including networking.  The argument here is not against sales it is just that sales-marketing is not a successful network marketing technique.

"But when talking to new people should I lead with the product or the business opportunity?"

Some companies consider themselves to be "product driven" meaning they feel their product is the reason people come to their program. While they might have an excellent product or service, what if your prospect is looking for a way to change their lives financially first and a good product that a lot of people need to back the income generating benefit? You will want to lead with the income and back it up with product. If your prospect has some challenge your product will address and is looking for income as the second reason for joining your program then you will want to lead with the product.

It is your choice in how to lead with your prospect. Both ways can give you results in your internet business but knowing which is the best for each prospect is the key to success.  Why not ask the prospect. After they view your website or read your marketing material ask: "What did you like best about what you read?" What about the program or product did you think can impact the marketplace best?  "Do you see yourself more as a customer or more as a distributor?"  Business builders are the most valuable people to add to your downline because they bring leverage potential with them. And, remember business builders use the product too, so they are customers with built-in leverage.

That is not to say that retailing product is wrong. Retailing is thought by many to be sales-marketing, and a box or bottle of product or your service can certainly be sold to people called customers. Left at that, it would be a sales-marketing situation, but after the first purchase and as the customer is receiving the benefits of using the product or service a savvy networker will introduce the referral strategy "let me show you how you can get your (product or service) for free" thus adding leverage to the process.

Timing is important here, best results are achieved in your internet home based business opportunity online after the customer is using the product or service and receiving the benefits. When you to try to sell people on the idea they need to enroll other people in a networking online home business to get the product or when they just want to be customers, they must go out and sell the product to other people, you set yourself up for a lot of market resistance by adding more steps to the marketing process. Of course if the customer is already familiar with network marketing this step is not as critical.

How you get through the networking process is an art. Why is it important to know this distinction? Because when you try to change the science rules, you fail. On the other hand, you must adjust the artistic part with market conditions and economic fluctuations.

If you talk to networkers all day long as I do, if you listen to their stories, you can tell exactly why they failed with past programs and you can predict their certain failure with their present business opportunity. They didn't have the basic principles (the science) of networking in place when they tried to run their previous home based business and they don't have them in place today.  They tried to run the online business by using only techniques and strategies and most used the wrong techniques as well.  In some cases they were never taught the rules and concepts, in other cases they "did it their way" or "a sponsor's way" ignoring the basics.

Those top income earners I talk with from this industry and the top income people in my marketing organizations all have one thing in common. We know the basic science of this business and all those ingredients are in place in our online home business. We also have an artful way in how we operate our businesses. The more you practice the art when the rules are in place, the better you get at it. The better you get at it, the more money you earn. It's just that simple.

I'm not talking about the way a person uses advertising or their style of generating people to talk to about their internet business when I say "the Art part of the business". There are many styles and media people use. Most will choose a way of generating leads that is comfortable for them. Direct mail, newspaper advertising, posters, flyers, supermarket bulletin boards, E-mail, personal contact with people they meet, there is instant messaging, search engine marketing with marketing pages, buying leads, the methods go on and on.  The style of promoting will vary from person to person in your downline. The Art part starts at the time of the first contact between you and the person you will be enrolling and continues through the life of the business association with that person.  Don't make the mistake of letting your method of gathering leads (that might get appropriate people to add to your downline) become the artistic part of your internet home based business opportunity online, it's a separate thing.  What you say in your advertising is however part of the art. It sets up the whole artistic side of your business building process.

Time and how you use time is your biggest asset. Income is a feature of using time and of specifically HOW you use the time available to you.  Income is a result of how many people are benefiting from your online business - so, right now today regardless of how you earn your living, you are impacting and benefiting X number of people and that's why you're earning the amount of money you are earning.

To make a living, people impact a fairly small amount of other people. If you want to create a lifestyle of abundance, simply figure out how you can create value to more people. Decide how many people's lives you can impact in a positive way through your online home business. While many business projects can be used as a vehicle, I know of no greater way to do that quickly than through network marketing and an internet home based business opportunity online.

Is Network Marketing An Art Or A Science?  That is a question I often get from college students and people from the academic world.  What they are really asking is, "Often successful artistic endeavors can be influenced by talent" and they falsely believe talent can't be learned or developed. Most people excel in life not because of genius but working hard to develop skills.

Actually it's a great question and one that can give us another way to unwrap this internet business.  The honest answer is, it's both. What you do is a science and how you do it is an art. That distinction seems to confuse a lot of networkers in the way they market today. They will do the artistic part but they forget about the scientific part.      

A science has precise rules. Mathematics is a science, if you add 2 of anything to 2 of the same kind you get 4. You don't get 6 sometimes and 5 at other times, you get 4 every time. Horticulture is a science: you plant pumpkin seeds you don't get turnips, you get pumpkins every time. Networking, in it's pure science, uses a group of basic rules to get predetermined results.  The process of networking has precise ingredients and specific steps that all provide leverage for your home based business. Understanding the science part of the process is critical if you and your downline people are to succeed beyond a mediocre level in your business opportunity.

By providing your downline people with a way to learn the basic skills of networking and giving them the correct information about their internet home based business opportunity online and the industry you are giving them the best chance to reach their potential. You need to know the basic elements yourself and you need to pass that knowledge along to those in your downline so they can put their part of your business on steroids. Remember in networking their business IS your business.

If in fact, the bulk of your income in online business networking comes not from those you enroll but from the people they enroll, then the business relationship you have with those you enroll is a management relationship, one of helping them in every way to enroll people who enroll other people. In the process a lot of product is ordered and the marketing group as well as the company succeeds along with you.

Chapter One continued ~ How Income Is Generated In A Networking Business

Somebody somewhere right now is reading this manuscript and saying to themselves "Hmm, it sounds like there is work involved here".  YES there is. After all it is the 2nd part of the word net-working. If you want more than "pin money" from any home based business including networking, you'll need to work for it. Let me point this out. If you want an excellent 2nd income or if you want to replace your full family income with a career and income most people only dream of, you'll do a little work to reach the level of business proficiency that achieves that result. Anyone that tells you differently is lying to you.    

What I am showing you is the easy way to do it using leverage. Using our example from before. you can go out and sell your program to 1000 people yourself, or you can enroll 10 people into your online business and don't rest until you've helped them enroll 10 people, manage that 10 people so they are accountable for managing their 10 people. Now you have a downline of 1000 people and you are working with only 10 people. I don't know about you, but I'd be hard pressed to make 1000 phone calls every week but I can call 10 people once each week to help them build their business. That is leveraging your time.

Here is the powerful part of this communication system. You are working with only 10 people at a time and each of the people in your downline is also working with only 10 people at a time. Communicating with 10 people each week is a manageable task. Two phone calls per day for 5 days is something anyone can do, You will be amazed when you apply this internet business building principal at the small amount of daily time it will take you to reach phenomenal income results fast.

Does this mean you should stop enrolling when you reach 10 enrollments? No of course not. In some cases your business opportunity may require the enrollment of more than 10 personal enrollments perhaps a lot more than 10.  What I'm suggesting is enrolling 5, 8 or 10 people and managing that group until they are able to create momentum using your system and then go after another small group until you have enough personal enrollments to build the size of online home business organization you want. As each person you're working with reaches his or her minimum 10 people you can add a fresh person to your daily schedule.   

Spending all your time enrolling personal enrollments leaves no time to work with those new people coming into your business. Effective growth is always achieved in an internet home based business opportunity online when you work with your new people and their contacts.  This is critical and it is during this time you make sure your personally enrolled people have access to the basic concepts of this business.

3) Here Is Another Basic Concept - continued.

Let's look at another style of marketing plan, the Uni-level:
A similar system might be used. Call it the basic 5 foundation. A salesman might put everyone in as a front line enrollment. But the networker, to create leverage, would put 5 people on their front line and help them enroll a basic 5 front line enrollments. Teach them in the process to do the same with each new enrollee and leverage is created. When the organization reaches the 4th level the networker would start another basic 5 foundation. One leg at a time.

You would have 25 on the 2nd level and 125 on the 3rd level of your online business. And you're working with 5 downline people. 5 X 5 = 25 X 5 = 125 X 5 = 625 X 5 = 3,125 X 5 = 15,625. Your first wave of momentum will come on the third level. The next two momentum waves will come on the fourth level. And your leadership will emerge within those 3 or 4 levels. Those leaders will, if they are taught your system, achieve their own leadership and momentum on their 3 or 4 levels, which might be your 5th 6th or 7th level. Now you have the start of a solid downline.    

Can you see how similar the conceptual strategy is and how to orchestrate it?  Any style of internet business network marketing plan can have a similar strategy designed for it if you keep leverage in mind.

Staffing your marketing group or downline means finding people that fit your business opportunity and your group. It does not mean trying to enroll "somebody, anybody and everybody."  You can purchase lists, buy costly advertising, mail postcards, pester friends, send unwanted e-mail in your efforts to enroll hundreds or thousands of people in your downline and hope that those who join will succeed. You can let the network company provide support and training (most of which will be incorrect). The ones that you enroll in your online home business who show some effort you can "pat on the back" with a "well done".  You can encourage those who aren't yet showing the effort to do the things they should AND if that is your business plan, you will end up with a very impotent downline. That's what the majority of networkers today are doing and they're not earning the money they want. That is a sales-marketing and sales management mentality. Sales-marketing strategies work in a sales business but they never have worked in networking and they won't work today. Adopting that sales-marketing working model in your internet home based business opportunity online will remove the leverage from your business building activities.

On the other hand, you can enroll a small group of people who each have a very strong desire to earn a superior income, people who want to take control of their time and their lives. Make sure they are dedicated to their strong desire, then teach them the basic concepts of networking, help them develop their skills, help them apply those skills within the basic networking concepts then you can have the kind of home based business results and income most networkers only dream of having. You'll also end up with a residual income for the rest of your life if you do it correctly.

By enrolling a small group, you can work with each of them to reach the income level they told you they wanted before you enrolled them. You did ask that question before you enrolled them, didn't you? If not, how do you know how strong their desire is to earn a superior income?  More about that subject in the next chapters.

3) Here Is Another Basic Concept - continued.

Regardless of the type or style of marketing plan, stair step, unilevel, binary, forced matrix, Australian 2 up or whatever your online business calls theirs, the following mechanics apply.

The more the design of the plan includes leverage, the better the program works to pay money out for income to those who work the business opportunity.

Every network-marketing plan is slightly different from another in the way the qualifications are set in place and commissions or bonuses are paid.  The more simplistic the rules are, the easier they are to work with and to design your internet business plan from. If for instance, if you add into the marketing plan a rule that a distributor must enroll one person to earn money for each level of income in their downline then you have placed another leverage point in your marketing plan. By adding that rule you also develop management skills within your downline people. In a later chapter I will discuss the importance of management skills.

Some online home business companies have requirements that a given amount of personal enrollments must be achieved before bonuses can be earned. Others have rules that certain dollar volumes must be maintained to qualify for increased percentages of commissions. Some have rules that say when you develop so many distributors with a certain monthly volume then you can get in the bonus system.  There are many ways to design compensation or marketing plans and each company has one they favor based on their type of style or structure.  If the plan is well designed, it's rules increase leverage for the people who participate, not breakage for company profit.   

A good one to use to explain leverage might be a matrix because it is simple:
If you had an internet home based business opportunity online that paid 10 levels deep and people needed to enroll 10 people, one to qualify for each level of income, everyone would have a goal to enroll at least 10 people, teach each of them to enroll at least 10 people and teach them to teach their 10 people to do the same. That is not duplication although a lot of networkers think of it that way. It is simply the mechanical process by which you build your marketing business team and ensure leverage takes place. Duplication is in the management and leadership process of how an organization functions and we will visit that subject in later chapters. 

To put that 10 level downline on steroids your focus would be on the third and forth level enrollments. You would make sure each person is working with each of their people to enroll at least 10 people who are working with their people to enroll at least 10 people. Any time you see a person in the first four levels on your downline report that has less than 10 people personally enrolled, you would contact their sponsor and find out why. You might need to team up with that sponsor and the downline person with less than 10 to help them enroll the minimum 10 people into their home based business. Remember, the bulk of your income comes not from those you enroll but from the people they enroll.

If you want to look at it a different way, if any person does not have 10 people enrolled they can't earn from all levels in their downline so they miss their maximum income potential. You need to insist they are completely qualified for every bit of income their business can pay them.  If you worry about their income you never need to worry about your income. Remember, "enlightened self interest".

The bulk of your income in networking comes not from those you enroll but from the people they enroll into your business opportunity. That is the least understood rule or concept in networking today.

High performance network marketing for your online business is building a marketing organization. It's not sales-marketing and it's not in personally recruiting a lot of people. High performance network marketing is gathering around you a few people with a strong desire to earn money, people who want to take control of their time and take control of building their lifestyle. A small group of dedicated people with a collective understanding of home based business networking specifically and the knowledge of marketing in general, can become a powerful team with unstoppable individual earning capacity for each of the group's members.

The income in a networking internet business is earned as a result of products or services purchased by customers OR by distributors in a marketing organization called a downline. Training and promotional tools for your online home business are services and products just like nutritional products, air fresheners, cleaning products, insurance, cosmetics, or telecommunications services. 

Commissions from purchases throughout the marketing downline are divided with those in the marketing organization upline from the purchaser. Because each purchaser can be a distributor if they wish, they can earn money from several levels of purchasers below them in their downline. That is just one point of leverage in your internet home based business opportunity online. Leverage marketing is often referred to as viral marketing. If every marketer enrolls more than two people in a downline you have achieved a small viral effect.

"I make money in Network Marketing the same way my downline people make money, we work for it - MORE IMPORTANTLY - I make money BECAUSE my downline people make money" -

That's a marketing statement - It's powerful - It's absolutely true - It sums up network marketing in total and what's more, any networker can use it. Please read it again and think about it. . . .

The reason people don't make money in a network business opportunity is because they don't understand internet business marketing and they don't understand networking. To make a lot of money in a home based business your downline people must make money. In the Network Marketing business my goal must be, that each person I personally enroll in any of my marketing groups will hopefully become better at this online home business than I am.  If they are not, it is my job to do everything in my power to help them become the best of the best.

My biggest worry must be, how can I get my downline people earning more money from their online business. That's called "enlightened self interest". In Network Marketing if you worry about how much money your downline people are earning you'll never have to worry about how much money you earn. Your income is always automatic.

The service you are marketing through networking is the opportunity to earn money using a company's product or service as the vehicle. The better you deliver that income generating service the more money you earn from your internet home based business opportunity online.

Unwrapping network marketing gives us the chance to look at it in its raw condition with the facts exposed. Without the glitter and hype often used by promoters trying to get people to join their programs, networking is quite simple to understand. It's simple because it only has a few basic concepts that make this type of marketing work. More importantly there are ways of marketing that don't work for a network marketing style of home based business.  Clearly, when a person understands the do's and don'ts of this fascinating business opportunity they can create an income that will provide an exceptional lifestyle regardless of their prior online business experience or personal circumstances.

First we will focus on the elements that help us build a viable marketing organization for our internet home based business opportunity online.

1) The First Basic Element Is Leverage

We visited that subject in the introduction. If what you are doing in your online home business does not create, produce or sustain leverage it might be suspect as a strategy or technique that might work in another internet business platform but not with networking. Networking is by its nature a service business not a sales business.

Leverage defined is; "Strategic advantage; power to act effectively" The verb, to Network is defined as: "Communicate with and within a group." Notice it is a continuing group activity.

Sales defined is; "An agreement in which property is transferred from the seller to the buyer for a fixed price in money." Notice it is a single one on one activity.

One of many areas of leverage might be:
To sell is a single activity between two individuals, repeated many times by one person with many individual people. "John sold to 10 customers." John is paid on his effort only. No leverage. 

"Mary networked with 10 people who networked with 10 people who networked with 10 people. Mary's downline has 1000 people all using the product or service." Mary is paid for orders through her own efforts and paid an amount because of the efforts of others, a lot of leverage on her effort.

John would need to repeat his sales activity with 1000 individual people to have 1000 customers Mary did her activity once with 10 people and leverage.

The First Basic Concept of Networking is Leverage.

Without a foundation an internet business is much like a house of cards, with nothing to attach walls and roof to, the slightest vibration of market conditions or breeze of adversity can cause the business opportunity to come crashing down. It is critical to the success of your networking business that you clearly understand that the foundation of an internet home based business opportunity online is in the basic concepts and the degree of success is in direct proportion to the application of those fundamentals.

There are only a few concepts in networking.  When all of them are applied, results are achieved and you have online business growth. But, when you remove any one of them, your growth slides and so does your profit. Marketing Organizations in direct marketing (affiliate systems and joint ventures) or network marketing businesses are both networking in their nature because the organizations are built by the act of networking with other people who are of like mind and jointly profiting as a result of the association with each other.
